Alleghany Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)

Photograph of the Alleghany ServiceberryAllegheny serviceberry is a native large shrub or small tree found naturally growing in woodlands. It grows best in well drained soils in full sun to partial shade. The white flower clusters are slightly fragrant and appear in early spring (April) before the leaves. The berries are blue and an excellent food source for native wildlife. The leaves are a lustrous dark green in summer and turn red-orange in fall.
